Nuola Akinde

She/they

Primary Genres: Mostly poetry and children’s stories for my own pleasure and emails, grants, newsletters etc. for work. Poetry is my first love, because it can take whatever form it needs to suit who you are and what you’re feeling in a given moment.

What might you like people to know about you as a writer? What you like people to know about you as a person?

I feel grateful to be in community with other writers. Whether it’s sharing poems with my parents who are both writers, being part of the Untold Sisters, or being named as a Writer of Ypsilanti, I cherish being received by others who love the craft.

YpsiWrites' theme this year is "Write for Change." Given this theme, what type of change do you think your writing inspires and what are your reasons for doing this writing?

I hope that my writing inspires people to reflect on their heritage, and the many versions of themselves that exists in each moment and throughout their lives. I hope it inspires them to see familiar things with a bit more reverence and curiosity. I hope it makes them smile (or cry) and feel seen.
