Engaging with Democracy

Join YpsiWrites and use the materials on this page to Engage with Democracy through Writing. Funded by a grant from the Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur Institute for Civic Education (UICE) at Eastern Michigan University, this project gives writers of all ages—school-age youth and adults—opportunities to engage with and explore themes connected to democracy through multiple forms of writing.

Three themed sets of materials are being created by teams of community members and teachers. The activities and resources in the student guides align with the Michigan K-12 Standards in English Language Arts and Social Studies as well as the Michigan Disciplinary Literacy Essentials in Social Studies.

YpsiWrites also invites you to submit your writing from this project for public displays and digital publications that will amplify youth and adult perspectives on democracy. We will also hold workshops and events to celebrate the program. We look forward to working and learning together as we expand our understanding of, appreciation for, and engagement with the values and principles of our democracy.
